SANTIAGO, Chile -- University of Michigan junior Abby Tamer, who redshirted the 2023 collegiate season while training with the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team, contributed to a silver-medal finish at the Pan American Games on Saturday (Nov. 4) at the Centro Deportivo de Hockey Césped.
Team USA narrowly fell, 2-1, to Argentina -- ranked No. 3 in the world -- in the gold-medal final. Argentina struck first in the first quarter, but the 15th-ranked Americans tied the game with a penalty-stroke goal just before halftime. Argentina converted on a go-ahead tip goal in the fourth quarter, but USA had its chances, drawing a pair of late penalty corners with a two-player advantage.
USA went 3-2 in the competition with both its losses coming against Argentina. The Americans previously fell 5-1 in pool play. Tamer shared the team lead with four goals, including a hat trick against Trinidad and Tobago in a 15-0 win in its opener and Team USA's first and game-winning goal in the second quarter of a 3-0 win over Uruguay. Tamer also scored as part of a shootout win against host Chile in the semifinals, converting on the fourth attempt to clinch the shootout 3-1.
USA claimed its sixth silver medal since the inception of women's field hockey at the Pan American Games in 1987.
With its victory, Argentina is one of five nations to earn direct qualification to the 2024 Paris Olympics as continental champions, in addition to host France. Sixteen nations also secured a place at one of two FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers. Team USA will compete at the Olympic Qualifier held from Jan. 13-21 in Ranchi, India, along with Germany, India, New Zealand, Japan, Chile, Italy and Czech Republic.
The teams that finish in the top three of each of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers tournaments will seal their qualification to the Olympic Games in Paris.
