ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked and seventh-seeded University of Michigan field hockey team battled No. 5-ranked and No. 2 seed Rutgers late into the game, but a late penalty corner conversion led the Scarlet Knights to a 1-0 victory Thursday (Nov. 2) at Phyllis Ocker Field in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.
After three quarters of scoreless play, Rutgers (16-2) was awarded back-to-back penalty corners and scored on the second, at 55:35. The corner was just the Scarlet Knights' third of the match on just their fifth shot.
Michigan (9-8) applied sustained pressure over the final four and a half minutes following the goal. U-M earned four penalty corners with a player advantage after a Rutgers yellow card. The Wolverines appeared to have scored to tie the match with a Lora Clarke tip, but it was waved off after a review. U-M pulled its goalie for the final minute of play but was unable to get another chance.
The Wolverines outshot the Scarlet Knights 9-7 and outcornered then 6-3, but Rutgers held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Caylie McMahon made four saves, while Anouk Veen led the Michigan in shots with four.
The Wolverines will await their postseason fate on Sunday (Nov. 5) at 10 p.m. during the NCAA Selection Show.
