
Michigan Sweeps Host Northern Arizona, First Day of Lumberjack Classic

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team kept its momentum rolling at the Lumberjack Classic with a 3-0 win over host Northern Arizona on Friday evening (Aug. 26) at the Rolle Activity Center.
With the win over the Lumberjacks, U-M swept both of its foes on Friday, making quick work of Old Dominion (25-23, 25-17, 25-14) earlier in the day.
Jess Mruzik led all players in kills (15) and in digs (19) to earn her first double-double of the season. Maddie Dowd led all players in assists with 28 while chipping in seven digs against NAU.
Michigan got off to a rocky start in set one, where they were down by six at one point. Behind the efforts of Jess Robinson and Mruzik at the service line and Mruzik's back-row kills the Wolverines were able to go on an 11-1 run to complete the comeback and caprture the opening set.
In the second set, U-M carried over that momentum and could not be stopped. May Pertofsky led the Wolverines with four kills, including a massive 10-foot kill from the right side, while Allison Jacobs put up impressive back-to-back kills in the middle of a 7-0 run.
It was back and forth throughout the third set with four lead changes and 13 ties. Mruzik set the pace with 10 of Michigan's 21 kills while also picking up six digs to lead U-M past the Lumberjacks.
The Wolverines outhit the Lumberjacks .227 to .096 while finishing with more blocks (5-4), kills (52-26) and digs (66-46).
Robinson and Pertofsky recorded 10 and nine kills, respectively, and led U-M with three blocks apiece. Jacobs chipped in eight kills and four digs.
U-M will be back in action Saturday (Aug. 27) when they face Utah Tech at 6:30 p.m. MST to cap off the Lumberjack Classic.
