
Michigan Dominates Old Dominion in First Match of Season

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team kicked off the 2022 campaign at the Lumberjack Classic with a convincing sweep win over Old Dominion on Friday afternoon (Aug. 26) at the Rolle Activity Center.
Junior Jess Mruzik paced the Wolverines with 12 kills, which led all players in the match and added seven digs. Classmate Hannah Grant led the match with three service aces and 10 digs, while Maddie Dowd led Michigan (1-0) in assists with 24.
Old Dominion (0-1) kept it close throughout the first set, but Michigan held on to win it 25-23. Senior Jess Robinson led Michigan in kills with four and added two blocks, and fellow senior May Pertofsky pitched in a pair of blocks of her own. Robinson got the last two points to take the opening set.
Mruzik jumped out of the gates with five kills including back-to-back, back-row kills. Tipping was the name of the game in the second set. Allison Jacobs, Pertofsky and Scottee Johnson all got in on the fun with some great tip placements and the Wolverines captured set two by a score of 25-17.
In the final set, Michigan had 19 total kills with only one error to push past Old Dominion 25-14. Freshman Serena Nyambio made her collegiate debut with a slam of her own to add to the Wolverine's lead.
The Wolverines outhit the Monarchs over the course of the match, .389 to .154 while finishing with more aces (5-4), digs (36-32) and blocks (10-8).
Robinson and Pertofsky each had eight kills to pace the Wolverines. Pertofsky and Jacque Boney each recorded three blocks, with Robinson and Mruzik each posting two.
U-M will be back in action tonight at 6:30 p.m. MST when it takes on host Northern Arizona in the Rolle Activity Center. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
