ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Josh Zawada went for five goals and six assists (11Â points) to help the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team rolled to a 21-5 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday (Feb. 12) in the Wolverines' first game of the season at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Zawada's assist and point totals break the single-game program record he set last week in the season opener last Saturday (Feb. 5) against Bellarmine.
Michigan's offense had another productive day, highlighted by scoring 20 goals or more for the second straight game. After taking an 11-2 halftime lead, the Wolverines kept things going strong in the second, including scoring three goals in just under 70 seconds in the third quarter.
In addition to Zawada's offensive fireworks, fellow attackmen Michael Boehm and Ryan Cohen added three goals apiece to go along with three and two assists, respectively.
The offense fired off a program-record 66 shots on goal Saturday, and a slew of other Wolverines also found the back of the net. Junior Jake Bonomi and sophomore Isaac Aronson each scored twice, while Lucas Delgado, Kevin Pimental, Grant McCurry, Aidan Mulholland and Jack Welcsh each added one tally. Notably, the Wolverines had a goalie assist by Shane Carr, the first for U-M since Emil Weiss recorded a helper versus Delaware in 2012.
Michigan (2-0) won the battle at the faceoff dot on the afternoon, going 18-for-30 (60 percent). Senior Nick Rowlett went 16-for-24Â while sophomore Justin Wietfeldt went 3-for-4. Carr had seven saves against two goals allowed in goal.
Detroit Mercy (0-2) was led by Brett Erskine with two goals. In goal for the Titans was Jakob Hemme who made 28 saves against 21 goals allowed.
With the win, Michigan moves to 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2018.
Michigan continues its season-opening five-game homestand next Saturday (Feb. 19), when the Wolverines welcome Holy Cross to Crusaders Saturday (Feb. 19) at 1 p.m.
