
Michigan Blanks Rival Michigan State to Collect Sweep of Season Series

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team completed a season sweep over Michigan State, defeating the Spartans in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 26-24) on Sunday (Oct. 30) at Crisler Center.
Combined with their 3-0 win over MSU in their first meeting (Oct. 14), the Wolverines did not drop a set to their rivals this season.
The Wolverines were led by Allison Jacobs on the attacking side with nine kills and Hannah Grant controlled the backcourt with 15 digs. Jess Robinson led all players with six blocks and chipped in seven kills, hitting at a .500 clip. Scottee Johnson led Michigan in assists with 18.
Michigan (14-8, 5-7 Big Ten) kicked off the first set on a 4-1 spurt behind kills from Jacobs, Jess Mruzik and Robinson. Michigan State (10-13, 1-11 Big Ten) pulled within one early after an attacking error by the Wolverines. U-M held its biggest lead at 20-11, using a balanced offensive attack led by Jacobs, who recorded five kills, and Serena Nyambio, who chipped in four. The Wolverines never looked back in taking the first set 25-17.
The Spartans collected the first two points of the second set, but Michigan quickly went back on the attack with five straight points,, taking advantage of four Spartan errors. MSU chipped away at the lead and eventually led 8-7. The turning point in the set came at the 10-9 mark when Nyambio and Mruzik combines for a stuff block. The Wolverines went on to collect three more blocks and a 13-10 lead. The Wolverines kept stride, taking the second set 25-17.
Continuing the blocking theme of the match, Robinson and Jacobs stuff blocked the Spartans for the first point of the final set. Michigan got out to a 15-9 lead before the Spartans took advantage of three Michigan errors and pulled within one and eventually pulled even at 23. The Wolverines capitalized on two Spartan errors to win the final set 26-24.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (Nov. 6) at 6:30 p.m. CDT when they face off against No. 9 Minnesota at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
