
Wolverines Drop 3-0 Decision to Fifth-Ranked Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 5-ranked Northwestern Wildcats on Thursday (Oct. 13) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan (6-6-3, 1-4-2 B1G) had a golden chance in the 25th minute, as freshman Taylor Brennan drew a foul in the U-M attacking third. The ensuing set-piece service was played in by junior Sarah Bridenstine to the top of the six and was headed by classmate Sammi Woods on frame. Her bounding attempt was struck well, but was right at Northwestern goalkeeper Mia Raben.
The Wolverines controlled the run of play in the first half, but Northwestern (12-1-2, 6-0-1 B1G) led the shot category in the opening frame as the Wildcats outshot Michigan 9-4. U-M goalkeeper Izzy Nino kept the Wolverines close in the opening half with five saves.
After keeping the score knotted at 0-0 for almost the entire opening half, U-M was unlucky to concede a goal with 1:29 left in the frame. Caterina Reggazoni finished from 14-yards top right for the opening goal of the contest.
The U-M offense rallied in the second half, outshooting NU 8-5. Woods and Lily Farkas led the charge with 5 combined attempts but fell just short of a goal.
Northwestern extended its lead in the 60th minute, with a shot by Aurea del Carmen landing in the bottom center of the Michigan goal. In the 85th minute, the Wildcats put the game to its final resting place with a late goal from Ella Hase.
Nino ended the match with seven saves, marking her third consecutive game with at least five saves. Senior Hannah Blake returned to the lineup after missing the previous match due to New Zealand senior national team duty. She came off the bench in the 32nd minute and logged 33 minutes on the pitch with one shot on goal.
Michigan will now hit the road for its final road trip of the regular season, traveling to State College, Pa., to take on the No. 25-ranked Nittany Lions on Sunday (Oct. 16). Match time is slated for 1 p.m.and will be broadcast via B1G+.
