COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team completed its third weekend sweep, extending its win streak to six straight games, with a 2-0 shutout against No. 11 Maryland on Sunday (April 11) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Wolverines have earned five shutout wins over their six games.
Michigan jumped on the Terrapins early with a pair of penalty corners in the opening two minutes of the contest but did not break through until the 20:30 mark in the second quarter. After a near miss inside their defensive circle, the Wolverines charged down the right side of the field. Sophomore Sarah Pyrtek fed the ball into the circle from the corner, freshman Lora Clarke stopped it and no-looked a pass to the middle, where junior Tina D'Anjolell lifted in a second-effort shot high into the cage. It was D'Anjolell's second goal of the season.
Freshman Anouk Veen also picked up her second goal of the season off a Wolverine penalty corner early in the fourth quarter, at 47:45. Michigan fed the ball across the circle to the right side, where junior Katie Anderson stopped it, and Veen wound up and stepped into a big shot, ramping it high off a Terp defender's stick and into the cage.
Maryland outshot the Wolverines, 13-6, and outcornered them, 7-3. Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker stopped all five Terp shots on goal, including a pair of toe saves early in the third quarter, en route to her sixth shutout of the season, while Maryland's Frost earned one save in the losing effort.
The Wolverines (9-2, 6-0 Big Ten) will close out the regular-season portion of its 2020-21 schedule with a non-conference game against Indiana next Saturday (April 17) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The game is slated for an 11 a.m. start and will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
