ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team concluded its regular season with its seventh straight victory, defeating Indiana, 3-0, in non-conference action on Saturday morning (April 17) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines have earned shutouts in six of their last seven games.
Michigan (10-2, 6-0 Big Ten), which clinched its 11th Big Ten title last weekend, held the Hoosiers without a shot and boasted a season-high 29 shots, including 15 on goal. The Wolverines also outcornered IU, 10-1.
Freshman Pilar Oliveros scored U-M's first and game-winning goal at the 13:54 mark, receiving the ball at the Indiana (1-13, 4-3 Big Ten) defensive 25, taking it straight to the cage and sending a reverse chip high to the left side. It was her first collegiate marker.
The Wolverines struggled to finish again until the second half when they tacked on two more late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. Senior/junior Kate Burney scored her first goal of the season at 49:30; after a pass deflected high off an IU player, Burney reached up over her head and knocked the ball down into the cage for the Michigan insurance.
Senior Kayla Reed converted off a Wolverine penalty corner just six minutes later, at 49:45, on a tip-in from in front of the Indiana cage. Senior Halle O'Neill hammered a direct shot to the goal, and standing right in front of the Hoosier goalkeeper, Reed got her stick on it and redirected it past her.
Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker did not have to make a save to secure her seventh shutout of the season. Indiana's Sachi Ananias posted 10 saves, while Hoosier back Mary Kate Kesler added a pair of defensive saves.
The Wolverines will be the No. 1 seed for the Big Ten Tournament, slated for next week in Iowa City, Iowa, and will face the winner of the Michigan State-Indiana play-in game in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. CDT at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field.
