ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out its final regular-season road trip in style with a dramatic victory and several career-best performances between meets at Virginia and Stanford on Saturday (April 20).
Shot putter Andrew Liskowitz took down an Olympic medalist to claim victory at the Virginia Challenge, while the effort at Stanford was headlined by strong performances by the distance runners.
More information on both meets can be found below.
With this final road trip of the regular season now in the books, the Wolverines will have next weekend off from competition for final exams. Michigan will have one final regular-season competition as it hosts the new U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium's first-ever outdoor competition -- the Len Paddock Open -- on Friday, May 3.

The vaunted Michigan throws group took center stage at Virginia on Saturday (April 20) as Andrew Liskowitz took the win in the invitational section of the shot put, and Joe Ellis was fourth in the invitational hammer throw.
Not only did Liskowitz get the victory in the shot put with a near-school-record heave of 20.23m (66 feet, 4.5 inches), he did so in come-from-behind fashion over the reigning Olympic silver medalist Joe Kovacs.
After taking the lead in the first round with a throw of 19.64m (64-5.25) and bolstering it with a 19.92m (65-4.25) in the second, Liskowitz lost to the lead to Kovacs. The Olympian and two-time IAAF World Championships medalist went 20.20m (66-3.25) on his second attempt. It would ultimately be his only fair throw in what was his 2019 outdoor debut.
In the fourth round, Liskowitz also would be passed by professional and former All-American Jordan Young.
Sitting in third entering the penultimate fifth round, Liskowitz heaved his best mark of the day, leapfrogging Young and bypassing Kovacs by three centimeters.
Nither Kovacs or Young could overtake him as they fouled their final throws.
Liskowitz's best mark -- just five centimeters shy of his own school record -- was the capstone of a career-best series. It was one of five marks farther than 19.50m, all of which rank among his 10 farthest outdoor career marks.
Based on the national descending order lists, he ranks No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in the Big Ten.
He was followed by Ellis' fourth-place finish in the hammer throw with a season's best mark of 70.88m (232-6).
After opening up with three marks farther than 70 meters in his opener last weekend, Ellis equaled or exceeded 70 meters on five of his six throws. He also heaved marks of 70.60m (231-7), 70.55m (231-5), 70.13m (230-1), and 70.00m (229-8). Only one other thrower in the field had more 70-meter throws.
Going by the national lists, Ellis will remain ranked 10th in the nation with his effort.
While Liskowitz and Ellis logged the highest-profile finishes of the day, they were joined by several other top-10 finishers.
On the track, Roland Amarteifio led the way with a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.84. Desmond Nicholas clocked a personal-record 21.48 (+1.9m/s) to finish seventh at 200 meters, while Vail Hartman slashed nearly half a second off his career-best time to finish ninth at 400 meters in 47.82.
Max Wagner was the runner-up in the open section of the high jump at 2.03m (6-8), and Manning Plater was sixth in the open hammer throw at 57.83m (189-8).

The Michigan distance runners availed themselves well against some of the top competition in the country at the Stanford Cardinal Classic on Saturday (April 20).
Ben Hill ran the fastest time of any Wolverine in the 1,500-meter event, clocking 3:47.13 for eighth place in the invitational section of the event.
The most exciting finish of the day came courtesy of true freshman Cole Johnson in section three of the 1,500 meters. In third coming off the final turn, Johnson found an extra gear and rapidly accelerated past two Gonzaga competitors to take the win in 3:49.33.
The young Michigan steeplechase corps continued its breakthrough 2019 spring in the event with a pair of personal-record performances. Lewis Tate chopped two seconds off his previous personal record to take seventh in 9:01.34, while Christian Hubaker slashed six seconds away with a ninth-place 9:06.56.
Tate's performance puts him closer to potentially qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries as one of the East Region's top 48 men in the event, while Hubaker could potentially find himself on the bubble with the performance.
