ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Collegiate outdoor track and field returns to the University of Michigan for the first time since 2012 -- and makes its debut at the new U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium -- this Friday (May 3) at 10 a.m. as the Wolverine men are set to host the Len Paddock Open.
In what will be the final regular-season tune-up ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Championships at Iowa, the Len Paddock Open will see many of Michigan's top competitors get one more dress rehearsal for the conference meet against the likes of Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
Among those expected to compete are All-Americans Andrew Liskowitz (throws), Taylor McLaughlin (hurdles) and Jack Aho (distance), as well as 2019 standouts Jack Lint (multi-events), Roland Amarteifio (hurdles), Devin Meyrer (distance) and Ben Hill (distance).
The meet also will mark the final home appearance for the graduating class of seniors.
Also in the field are athletes from Canadian institutions Western Ontario and York University, as well as several unattached competitors.
Field events begin at 10 a.m. with action on the track getting underway at noon. The full program for the Len Paddock Open -- which debuted in 1986 and was last held in 2012 -- is tentatively expected to conclude by around 4:30 p.m.
Spectators can attend the meet for free. Those who cannot make it to 2530 S. State Street in person can follow along via live results from Delta Timing and on the official Michigan track and field Twitter account, @umichtrack.
The full schedule of competitors can be found below, followed by news and notes from this 2019 outdoor season to date.
Wolverines to Watch
• Fresh off an upset of a reigning Olympic medalist two weekends ago, Andrew Liskowitz will go for the shot put school record he missed by just five centimeters in that last outing. After twice setting indoor school records at home meets this winter, he will look to add an outdoor record to that collection starting at noon.
• National title contender Taylor McLaughlin is slated to make his season debut in the 400-meter hurdles. The two-time Big Ten champion will further bolster a 400-meter hurdles crew that is ranked top-10 nationally as a group by the USTFCCCA, and will look to kick-start what will be the final postseason run of his collegiate career.
• Roland Amarteifio has been the Wolverines' top 400-meter hurdler so far in 2019, but he will turn his focus to the 110-meter hurdles this Friday. He and teammate Sierra Hendrix-Williams, as well as the decathlete Jack Lint, will run in the even. All three are expected to score points for the Wolverines next weekend at Big Tens.
• The Michigan men will be loading up in the 1,500-meter event with 17 competitors set to don the maize and blue for that distance. Chief among them are the Wolverines' top metric miler of the spring in Ben Hill, along with Michigan's top long-distance runners in Jack Aho and Devin Meyrer, and the top mid-distance guys in Matt Plowman, Derrick Simmons and Cole Johnson.

Wolverine Bites
• FloTrack is projecting three-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion Taylor McLaughlin as the early-season favorite for the national title in the 400-meter hurdles. He is expected to make his 2019 debut in his signature event this weekend.
• Flotrack is also projecting Big Ten champion throwers Joe Ellis and Andrew Liskowitz to finish top-10 nationally. A first team All-American in the hammer throw in 2017, Ellis is predicted to finish eighth in 2019, while the three-time second team All-American shot putter Liskowitz is ranked 10th.
• After upsetting reigning Olympic silver medalist Joe Kovacs in the Virginia Challenge shot put two weekends ago, Andrew Liskowitz became Michigan's top-ranked student-athlete in the national descending order lists so far this outdoor season. His titanic 20.23m (66, feet, 4.5 inches) heave moved him up to No. 7 nationally. He is joined top-10 nationally by hammer thrower Joe Ellis and decathlete Jack Lint, both ranked No. 10. Below is a list of the Wolverines ranked top-50 nationally heading into this weekend.
7. Andrew Liskowitz / Shot Put / 20.23m (66-4.5)
10. Joe Ellis / Hammer Throw / 70.59m (231-7)
10. Jack Lint / Decathlon / 7,596 points
36. Roland Amarteifio / 400-meter hurdles / 51.47
45. Job Mayhue / 110-meter hurdles / 13.99
• Through just two competitions, both Ellis and Liskowitz are off to career-best starts. Not only was Ellis' hammer throw mark at the Triton Invitational on April 13 the farthest season-opening mark of his career, he also crossed 70 meters three times on the day. He followed that the next weekend with five more throws of 70 meters or farther.
• Roland Amarteifio is integral to what has become one of the best hurdle corps in the country this young 2019 outdoor season. Even without the three-time All-American McLaughlin having debuted yet, the 400-meter hurdles group of Amarteifio, Noah Caudy, Job Mayhue and Sean Marshall is ranked as the eighth-best quartet in the event nationally in the USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings. Mayhue had a breakthrough at Louisville in mid-April, leading a quartet with Amarteifio, Sierra Hendrix-Williams and Jack Lint also ranked eighth in the country.
• The Michigan distance crew also has been strong early in 2019. The young quartet of steeplechase debutants in Joost Plaetinck, Lewis Tate, Christian Hubaker and Dominic Dimambro -- none among them above sophomore eligibility -- are ranked No. 8 nationally in the Event Squad Rankings. The quartet of Aho, Meyrer, Isaac Harding, and Gabe Mudel have the Wolverines ranked No. 18 nationally at 5,000 meters.
• All of the aforementioned Wolverines and more are hoping to qualify for the NCAA Championships, but they will first have to make it through the NCAA East Preliminaries in late May. Qualification for the East Prelims requires a student-athlete to be among the 48 highest-ranked athletes in the East Region who declare to compete in a given event. With some who choose to not declare -- for instance, those who rank highly in multiple events who choose to focus on a different event -- the actual rank of those who qualify can dip into the 50s and potentially the 60s.
• Below is a list of where Michigan men currently rank in the NCAA East Region, along with the performance that ultimately served as the 48th and final performance accepted into the Prelims for context. They are separated into five categories of likelihood of eventual qualification, based on previous years' last qualifying marks and how the events are shaping up across the region in 2019.
