ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A pair of All-Americans from the University of Michigan men's track and field team did what they do best on Friday (May 3) to lead the Wolverines to an impressive showing at a Len Paddock Open meet that served as the beginning of a new era of outdoor home meets and the 2019 regular-season finale.
Shot putter Andrew Liskowitz and hurdler Taylor McLaughlin scored two of the seven event victories racked up by the Wolverines in the first-ever home meet at the new U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium.
Competing against the likes of regional opponents from the Mid-American Conference and Canada, the Wolverines compiled four more runner-up finishes and 23 total top-five performances as they now switch gears with the Big Ten Championships next Friday through Sunday (May 10-12) at Iowa.
Picking up where he left off two weekends ago at Virginia, Liskowitz approached the 20-meter threshold multiple times throughout his victory in the shot put. His winning heave of 19.99m (65 feet, 7 inches) in the second round was nearly equaled one throw later as he went 19.98m (65-6.75) in the third. He would ultimately foul his last three throws.
His throws on Friday were the third- and fourth-best of his career.
McLaughlin, meanwhile, showed that he is ready to defend his Big Ten title in the 400-meter hurdles as he made his 2019 debut in the event with a big victory. With his nearest opponent more than three seconds behind him, he clocked 51.36 for the win.
His was not the only impressive showing in the hurdles by the Wolverines as Sierra Hendrix-Williams and Roland Amarteifio went 1-2 in the 110-meter hurdles in slightly wind-aided times of 14.25 and 14.26, respectively.
The sprints events were strong for the Wolverines on Friday as they also got victories from Desmond Nicholas at 100 meters in 10.73 (+1.8m/s) and Desmond Melson at 400 meters in 48.81.
Nicholas' individual win came after anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team of Josiah Carpenter, Joe McCarthy and Stephen Hagen. McCarthy would come back and finish runner-up at 200 meters in a career-best 21.62 (+1.9m/s).
Steeplechaser Dominic Dimambro accounted for the remaining first-place finish for the Wolverines. The strongest distance performances of the day came courtesy of runner-up Jack Aho and third-place Isaac Harding in the 1,500 meters as they ran to respective personal records of 3:48.55 and 3:50.56.
