IOWA CITY, Iowa -- With three scoring performances and three more qualifiers into finals later this weekend, the University of Michigan men's track and field team got off to a strong start at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 10).
Hammer throwers Joe Ellis and Manning Plater and distance runner Devin Meyrer all put points on the board for the Wolverines as the squad closed out the first of three days of competition at Iowa tied for fourth in the overall standings.
Through just four of 21 events scored, the Wolverines are tied with Rugers at 16 points. Penn State is the early leader with 28 points, followed closely by Indiana with 27. Wisconsin is third with 21.
Ellis was runner-up and Plater was sixth in the hammer throw for 11 combined points -- eight for Ellis and three for Plater -- with Meyrer kicking in five more with a fourth-place finish in the 10,000-meter finals.
Competing in the final Big Ten Championships meet of his illustrious career, Ellis notched his third-consecutive top-two finish in the hammer throw. After a slow start, he started to heat up in the third round as he moved into the lead with a heave of 70.04m (229 feet, 9 inches). He entered the final in the lead, but again fell behind early leader (and eventual winner) Morgan Shigo of Penn State in the first of three rounds in the final.
Ellis saved his biggest throw of the day for last, going 70.65m (231-9) on the very last throw of the competition, but it was not enough to overtake Shigo's 72.04m (236-4) from the throw prior.
For Plater, a third-round throw of 63.98m (206-11) obliterated his previous career-best by nearly five feet and was enough to move him to sixth from his pre-meet seeding at No. 8 -- good for three more team points.
Meyrer emerged from a 10,000-meter race that was bunched together for three-quarters of the way until it turned into a mad dash for the finish line. Positioned well when the move occurred, Meyrer ultimately crossed the line in 29:40.20 to finish fourth.
When top two finishers Morgan McDonald of Wisconsin and Ben Veatch of Indiana broke away with 1,000 meters to go, Meyrer established himself at the point of the chase pack behind them. With a lap to go, Meyrer -- a transfer from Baylor competing at his first Big Ten Outdoor Championships -- took the bell for the final lap in third. He ultimately missed third place by .15 second behind Purdue's Curtis Eckstein.
In addition to the pair of finals, the Friday schedule also featured qualifying rounds on the track in three different events for the Wolverines. Of the eight chances Michigan had to advance student-athletes on to final-round competitions on Sunday, the Wolverines capitalized on three of them.
The 400-meter hurdles crew asserted itself as one of the best in the country as two-time Big Ten champion Taylor McLaughlin and Roland Amarteifio posted the two fastest qualifying times of the prelims. Amarteifio got things rolling with a runaway victory in a career-best 51.27 in the first heat, securing his second consecutive berth into the conference final.
McLaughlin re-established himself as the favorite in heat two as he clocked a season's best 50.83 for not only the race win but the fastest performance of the preliminaries. Both he and Amarteifio will go for big points in the final at 2:18 p.m. CDT.
Ben Hill punched his ticket to Sunday's final at 1,500 meters as he advanced with a non-automatic qualifying berth. After finishing fourth in his heat -- just one spot outside earning an automatic spot in the final -- with a time of 3:46.54 thanks to a hard charge, he was left to the mercy of the final heat to see if he would advance with one of three non-auto berths.
No one in the final heat would run faster, cementing Hill's status as a finalist.
Earlier in the day, decathlete Jack Lint positioned himself well for a run at some big points for the Wolverines as his 10-event slog continues on Saturday (May 11). Through the first five events, Lint checked in at fifth in the overall standings with 3,886 points.
Though he fell as far down as seventh in the standings entering the fifth and final event of the day, Lint closed in career-best fashion to climb up two spots. He clocked a new personal-record 49.03 over 400 meters -- the second-fastest time of anyone in the field -- to finish strong.
Looking forward to Saturday, he trails fourth place by just 77 points and is exactly 200 points out of second.

The second of three days at Big Tens commences Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. CDT as Lint gets underway in the final five events of the decathlon. Daniel Butael kicks off the field events for the Wolverines with the long jump at 1:20 p.m. CDT, and the track session kicks off at 4 p.m. CDT with qualifying rounds in the 400 meters, 100 meters, 110-meter hurdles and 800 meters leading up to the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
Notably, Big Ten Indoor shot put champion Andrew Liskowitz will look to add an outdoor title to his resume when his final begins at 2 p.m. CDT.
