ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Emma Way scored a pair of goals, including the overtime game-winner, to propel the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Pacific in its home opener on Friday night (Sept. 7) in front of a crowd of 468 at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Way netted the game-winning goal 1:43 into the overtime frame after intercepting an errant Pacific pass near the Tigers' defensive 25, carried the ball one-on-one into the circle and buried a reverse chip to the lower-right corner of the cage. It was Way's second game-winner and second multi-goal effort of the season. She leads the Wolverines with six goals.
After a scoreless first half, Way broke through with her first marker early in the second, at 38:26, on a Michigan penalty corner. Senior Regan Leavitt inserted to freshman Kathryn Peterson, who fed the ball right-to-left across the circle for Way. The Wolverine captain fired a shot on goal, and it hit traffic in front, deflecting and dribbling into the cage.
The Tigers evened the game on a wild goal out of a timeout late in regulation, at 59:31, hammering a hard pass into the circle from the right sideline at the 25. The ball deflected off a Pacific stick near the right post and redirected into the near side.
In all, Michigan outshot the Tigers, 17-3, and outcornered them, 12-4. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker faced just the one shot on goal -- the tip from outside the circle -- while Pacific goalkeeper Marlise van Tonger earned three saves in addition to a second-half UP defensive save.
The Wolverines (2-3) will wrap up the home weekend on Sunday (Sept. 9), hosting Monmouth at noon at Ocker Field. It is Michigan's Cardiac Awareness Game and will feature an M-Healthy kids fitness challenge, and stress-ball and schedule cup giveaways. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
