EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell, 4-1, to No. 17 Northwestern on Friday night (Sept. 28) in a Big Ten Conference road match.
The Wolverines outshot Northwestern, 13-10, but it was the Wildcats who came away victorious. All five goals came in the first half, with sophomore Alia Martin scoring the lone goal of the night for the Maize and Blue off a pass from Katie Foug.
Northwestern scored its first two goals six minutes apart, then added two more within 10 minutes of each other. Brenna Lovera netted the first goal, and Kayla Sharples scored the game-winning goal on a header off a corner kick. Jenny Haskel and Haley Lawson added the final two goals of the night for the Wildcats, while Mackenzie Wood earned the win in net, making three saves.
The Wildcats opened scoring early on their first corner kick of the game when the ball bounced out to the feet of Lovera, who ripped the ball into the upper-left corner of the net in the 11th minute. Northwestern quickly extended its lead to 2-0 on its second corner kick of the match, when Sharples headed a ball into the back of the goal in the 16th minute.
Michigan cut the deficit to one when Ashley Calcagno brought the ball up the field and passed it up to a striking Foug on the right side of the pitch. Foug worked her way around the defender and crossed the ball to Alia Martin, who took the ball to the right and drove a shot into the upper-left corner of the net.
Northwestern brought its lead back to two goals, scoring a pair of unanswered goals 10 minutes apart to take a 4-1 lead over the Maize and Blue heading into halftime despite the Wolverines owning a 7-6 shot advantage.
Michigan earned a set-piece in the 70th minute, but the shot from Reilly Martin sailed high over the net. The Wolverines earned a second chance to try to get within two of Northwestern when Nicki Hernandez took a shot that was tipped out of the bottom-right corner of the net by Wood.
Michigan will return home for two matches starting Thursday, Oct. 5 against Ohio State. First touch is slated for 7 p.m., and the contest will be streamed live on BTN Plus (paid subscription required). The Wolverines will conclude the weekend Sunday, Oct. 7 when Penn State comes to U-M Soccer Stadium for a noon match.
