ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Nicki Hernandez's second-half goal lifted the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-0 Big Ten Conference victory over Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 5) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines notched their fourth shutout of the season and third in Big Ten action with the victory over the Buckeyes. Sophomore goalkeeper Hillary Beall had a standout match in net, making five key saves in just her fourth start of the season for the Maize and Blue.
Hernandez netted her team-best seventh goal of the season and third game-winner of the year off a pass from senior Reilly Martin, whose assist is the sixth of the season to lead the team in that category.
Sophomore Sarah Stratigakis took a team-high five shots on the night, with one reaching goal, while Hernandez was the only other Wolverine to test Ohio State goalkeeper Devin Kerr.
Kayla Fischer led the Buckeyes with two shots on goal; Kerr made one save and took the loss in net.
Stratigakis attacked the Ohio State defense early, taking the first three shots of the game. In the 23rd minute, Martin sent a cross into the box from the left side that touched the head of Raleigh Loughman. The ball bounced off the right post and onto the foot of a defender. The play was reviewed after it was called a goal for the Wolverines. After further review, the goal was called back and the match remained scoreless.
Ohio State saw two good opportunities in the first half, but it was quickly shut down as Beall stepped up and made two key stops for the Maize and Blue in the 30th and the 41st minutes.
Junior Brooke Cilley made a stop that would lead to a Michigan goal as she lifted the ball down the left side of the field for Martin to chase down. She brought the ball into the 18-yard box and made a cross to the breaking Hernandez. The ball tipped off the gloves of Kerr and Hernandez made the touch into the back of the net from two yards out to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.
Beall continued to keep the Buckeye offense in check when she made her fifth save of the night on a breakaway shot in the 70th minute. The Wolverines stepped up following the save to make the stop on the corner and keep the 1-0 lead intact.
The Buckeyes continued to press in the closing 20 minutes, but the Wolverine backline held strong as there were no further threats to secure the victory.
Michigan will be back in action Sunday (Oct. 7) when it welcomes Penn State for a noon match at U-M Soccer Stadium. The women's match will be the first of a doubleheader with the U-M men's soccer team, which will take on No. 2 Indiana at 3 p.m.
