ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A second half-surge by Penn State proved to be too much for the University of Michigan women's soccer team as it was defeated, 2-1, by the Nittany Lions on Sunday (Oct. 7) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan earned the early lead with a first-half goal by sophomore Sarah Stratigakis, but it was the Nittany Lions who netted two goals in the second half to lift them victory.
Stratigakis scored her sixth goal of the season, while Reilly Martin took three shots that reached net for the Maize and Blue. Sophomore Hillary Beall took the loss in goal while making three saves on the afternoon.
The Wolverines dominated the first half outshooting Penn State 9-3, but the Nittany Lions came out of halftime firing on all cylinders.
Kristin Schnurr netted the game-tying goal early in the second half, while Frankie Tagliaferri scored the game-winner for the Nittany Lions in the 82nd minute with a top-shelf shot. Charlotte Williams and Shea Moyer each tallied an assist and Amanda Dennis earned the win in goal, making four saves.
Penn State had the first scoring opportunity of the match when Marissa Sheva found herself with just a Michigan defender on her back in the fourth minute, but the shot sailed wide of the left post to keep the contest scoreless.
Stratigakis moved herself off a defender on a ball that bounced off the foot of a Penn State player to find just the keeper between herself and the goal. The Wolverine midfielder gained her balance and put the ball into the lower-left corner of the net past a diving Dennis to give the Maize and Blue an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the first half.
The Wolverines continued to press offensively, taking nine shots to Penn State's three in the first 45 minutes of play and carried the one-goal advantage into the second half.
The Nittany Lions knotted the score at 1 in the second half when Schnurr took a shot from the left side of the box from 12 yards out that made its way past a diving Beall. Penn State looked to take the advantage minutes later when Schnurr found herself alone in the box, but sailed the shot over the net in the 73rd minute.
Penn State found the go-ahead goal when Moyer made a thru-pass up to Tagliaferri, who finished the shot with a top-shelf goal.
The Wolverines will hit the road for the final time in the regular season when it travels to Lincoln, Nebraska, on Friday (Oc.t. 12) for a contest against Nebraska. Michigan will close out the weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, next Sunday (Oct. 14) against the Hawkeyes.
