LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned one point in the Big Ten Conference standings as it played to a 1-1, double-overtime draw against Nebraska on Friday night (Oct. 12) at Barbara Hibner Stadium.
Senior Reilly Martin scored the lone goal -- her sixth of the season -- of the night for Michigan, while sophomore Nicki Hernandez brought her point total to 20 with an assist on the goal. Sophomore Hillary Beall made six saves in net for the Wolverines and the Michigan offense tested the Nebraska keeper four times.
Sinclair Miramontez netted the tying goal for the Cornhuskers in the closing 40 seconds of regulation to send the match into overtime. The Cornhuskers outshot Michigan, 15-9, in the 110-minute match.
Michigan capitalized on its first opportunity in the eighth minute of the match as Hernandez passed the ball to Martin in the middle of the field. Martin took one look at the defense in front of her and fired a shot from more than 30 yards out to give the Maize and Blue the early advantage.
With under five minutes to play in the first half, Nebraska produced its first real offensive threat of the match using a header inside the 18-yard box that was saved by Beall before she came up with one final save in the half to allow Michigan to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
Nebraska opened the second half with a strong opportunity to score, but again Beall was there to make the save to maintain the Wolverines' 1-0 lead in the 51st minute. Michigan controlled the ball well during its time of possession before the Cornhuskers attempted to press in the closing 10 minutes of regulation.
With two minutes remaining in the match, Nebraska found a wide-open shot off a throw-in as Beall stood tall in net and made the easy save at her chest. The Cornhuskers continued to press as time was ticking down, then earned a free kick and scored off a free-kick rebound to tie the match with 40 seconds left on the clock to sending the match into overtime.
The Wolverines found two opportunities to score in the first overtime period, but one shot sailed wide of the net and the other was saved by the Nebraska keeper and the matched headed into a second overtime period.
Senior Abby Kastroll had a good look on a cross from Martin, but her shot in the 106th minute would sail wide right. Martin got one final look in the final 10 seconds of the match, but her shot would also go wide of the goal.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 14) when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. CDT match against the Hawkeyes.
