ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used an offensive explosion, downing in-state foe Central Michigan, 9-0, to claim its fourth straight home win on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 16) in front of a crowd of 682 at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Six different Wolverine players scored in the contest, notably senior Emma Way, junior Meg Dowthwaite and sophomore/freshman Kate Burney, who tallied two goals apiece. It was the first collegiate goals for Burney; freshman Tina D'Anjolell also posted her first career marker. It was the most goals scored by the Wolverines in a game since similarly scoring nine against UC Davis last season.
Way scored the first and game-winning goal at the 9:13 mark, knocking down a long aerial pass from senior Regan Leavitt on the right sideline before pulling left and sending a reverse chip into the lower-right corner of the cage. Way scored again late in the half, at 25:30, with a one-time shot in front. She leads the Wolverines with 10 goals on the season -- just three off her career best -- and four game-winners.
Dowthwaite scored her two goals in just a 68-second window midway through the first half, scoring at 17:45 after a steal just outside the top of the circle and adding another at 18:53 on a one-timer off a pass from freshman Katie Anderson, giving the Wolverine rookie her first collegiate point.
Burney netted her first goal of the game -- and first of her career -- at the 22:47 mark on a tip in front of the CMU cage. Burney, who also assisted on Way's second goal, added a second goal herself on a corner rebound at 52:27. D'Anjolell also used a tip from the left post to record her first collegiate goal.
Junior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort and freshman Kathryn Peterson rounded out the Wolverine scoring at the end of the first and second halves, respectively. Fernandez Lacort found the top-left corner on a cross-cage reverse chip at 29:44, while Peterson buried a corner direct shot in the waning moments of the game at 68:19. Peterson scored her first collegiate goal on Friday night against Rutgers.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 27-1, and outcornered them, 7-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Sidonie LaPlante did not have to make a save for her first collegiate shutout, while CMU's Abigail Ebersole stopped 11 of U-M's 20 shots on goal.
The Wolverines (5-3) will hit the road next weekend for a pair of Big Ten Conference slates. Michigan will take on Penn State at 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 21) in State College, Pennsylvania, before heading south for a noon contest at Maryland on Sunday (Sept. 23) in College Park, Maryland.
