The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (5-2), will travel to No. 4 Notre Dame and Maryland, Baltimore County in a two-game week. The Wolverines will square off against the perennial power Fighting Irish on Wednesday (March 21) and against the Retrievers on Saturday (March 24).
WOLVERINE BITES
• Junior Brent Noseworthy enters the week with 22 goals to rank first in the Big Ten and No. 8 in the country with 3.14 goals/game. His shooting percentage of .470 checks in at No. 5 in the Big Ten (22 goals on 47 shots). Noseworthy has marked at least one point in each of his last 21 games, and has 59 goals and 10 assists for 69 points over that span. Overall, he has registered a point in 25 of 28 games played in his career. In the three contests he did not register a point or shot as a freshman, he was solely a part of U-M's man-up unit.
• Ninety-eight of U-M's 128 points have come via the junior (57) and freshman (41) classes. Noseworthy and freshman Kevin Mack are tied for the team lead in points (26), while juniors Decker Curran (16), freshman Alex Buckanavage (15) and junior Rocco Sutherland (13) check-in as juniors and freshmen with double-digit points. Mack's 26 points rank him fourth in the country for freshmen, and he is seven points off Ian King's (2014) record for points in a season with 33.
• Michigan checks in at No. 19 offensively (11.86 goals/game) and No. 17 defensively (8.86 goals/game) in the national rankings. According to AnalyticsLacrosse.com, Michigan ranks No. 10 in raw offense, No. 13 in adjusted offense and No. 7 in shooting efficiency.
• After he was featured primarily as a defensive midfielder in his first three-plus seasons, senior captain Chase Young made the transition to offensive midfielder prior to the Siena contest (March 3). Highlighted by a hat-trick against Air Force (March 9), Young now boasts seven goals and a trio of assists for 10 points.
• Senior goalie Tommy Heidt earned his first start of the season against Marquette (March 17) and made 10 saves to go along with three ground balls. Heidt, who started every contest for the Wolverines a season ago, missed the early portion of this season due to a lower-body injury. Sophomore Matt Trowbridge filled in admirably in his place, and led U-M to a 4-2 record.
• U-M's ranked future opposition features this week's opponent in No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 2 Maryland (March 31), No. 11 Rutgers (April 8), and No. 9 Johns Hopkins (April 21). Other opponents in Ohio State (April 14) and Penn State (April 31) are receiving votes in the Maverik media poll.
OPPONENT PREVIEWS
Notre Dame
The No. 4 Fighting Irish carry a 4-1 overall mark into the midweek matchup, and are coming off a 9-7 win over Virginia on Saturday (March 17). Notre Dame also is 1-1 against top-five opponents on the season, as they fell, 12-10, at No. 2 Maryland on March 3, but defeated No. 5 Denver, 11-9, on March 10.
Offensively, Brendan Gleason leads the team in points (15), and ranks No. 4 in the country in shooting percentage (59 percent), while Bryan Costabile leads the team in goals (12). As a whole, the Fighting Irish rank No. 10 in the NCAA on the defensive end of the field, allowing 8.40 goals per contest.
Notre Dame holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series against Michigan after the Irish defeated U-M, 16-5, in last year's tilt in South Bend. Michigan has yet to defeat a top-five opponent, or beat a ranked team on the road.
UMBC
The Retrievers own a 2-5 overall mark on the season and have lost two straight contests: at Johns Hopkins (13-6, March 13) and at home against Stony Brook (7-6, March 18).
Billy Nolan leads the team in goals (nine), assists (five) and points (14), while Trevor Patschorke and Ryan Frawley each have nine goals on the season.
