The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team begins a two-game week, starting with a matchup against the Bellarmine Knights on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at 3 p.m. from U-M Lacrosse Stadium, before traveling to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to take on the No. 18 Penn Quakers on Saturday (Feb. 17) at noon from Franklin Field.
WOLVERINE BITES
• With a 15-5 win over Cleveland State on Saturday (Feb. 10), U-M earned the first-ever win at U-M Lacrosse Stadium and the first victory of head coach Kevin Conry's Michigan career. Junior Brent Noseworthy netted the first-ever goal at U-M Lacrosse Stadium with 14:14 left in the first quarter.
• Noseworthy racked up five goals on seven shots to lead the output against the Vikings last week. His five goals tied the second most in a single game in U-M history and was just one marker off from tying the program record, which he set against the Vikings in a 2017 matchup (six goals). Noseworthy shares the single-game record with former Wolverine Ian King, who accomplished the feat twice.
• The Wolverines are 12-4 all-time against unranked opponents in the month of February -- highlighted by a 4-0 month in 2017 with wins over Cleveland State, Lafayette, Detroit and Bellarmine.
• The new-look Wolverines featured several familiar faces in different positions in the season's first game, most notably Noseworthy's shift to midfield and junior Nick DeCaprio's move to close defense. Sophomore Matt Trowbridge earned the starting nod in goal, while four others in freshmen Alex Buckanavage and Kevin Mack (attack), junior Michael Borda (close defense) and sophomore Finn Goonan (close defense) earned first career starts.
• With four ground balls against Cleveland State, DeCaprio moved into fourth in the U-M record books with 75 in his career. He also ranks second in pickups for a longstick in Wolverine annals behind Chase Brown (2013-16, 133).
• Buckanavage led the attack unit with three goals and two assist for five points. The effort makes him the first freshman attackman to register a hat trick in his initial campaign since Noseworthy scored a trio against Brown on March 12, 2016.
• In addition to Buckanavage and Mack, freshmen Ben Cirella, Hunter Batesko, Alex Calkins, Jackson Zaugg, Tillman Gallagher and JD Carroll made their Wolverine debuts.
OPPONENT PREVIEWS
Bellarmine
The Knights enter the Tuesday tilt with a 0-1 record after falling to Robert Morris by a 15-7 count in their season opener on Feb. 9. Bellarmine's top returning scorers from last season are Brian Wall and Ian Miller, who each totaled 21 points a season ago. Their defense features All-SoCon performer Kevin Fahey, who had 14 ground balls and seven caused turnovers in 2017.
Michigan is 3-2 all-time versus the Knights and have won each of the last three matchups by a combined 40-24 margin. The most recent victory came via a 13-5 score on Feb. 18, 2017, in Louisville.
Penn
No. 18 Penn opens its season against the Wolverines due to the later start in the Ivy League season. The Quakers were picked third in the Ivy League preseason media poll behind fellow U-M opponents Yale and Princeton. Penn returns the vast majority of its offense, with 11 of its top scorers from a season ago, as well as its top FOGO in Chris Santangelo, and starting goalkeeper, Reed Junkin.
U-M is 1-1 all-time versus the Quakers, with arguably the biggest win in program history coming over the then-No. 10 Quakers by a 13-12 score on March 11, 2017, inside a frigid Michigan Stadium. The win was U-M's first victory over a top-10 opponent and propelled the Wolverines into the USILA top-20 for the first time.
