COLUMBUS, Ohio --The University of Michigan women's soccer team conceded the game's only goal in the 81st minute, falling to No. 17 Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 8) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Overall, the Buckeyes outshot the Wolverines, 17-4, and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Buckeyes held a 6-1 edge in shots in the opening half, but it remained scoreless through 45 minutes of play as senior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson made saves on both of OSU's shots on frame.
Freshman Sarah Stratigakis produced Michigan's chance in the first half in the 28th minute as she carried the ball up the middle of the park and created her own shot just inside side the penalty box, but Ohio State keeper Devon Kerr made the stop.
In the 62nd minute, junior Reilly Martin won the ball in Michigan's attacking third and played a ball across the top of the 18-yard box to junior/sophomore Katie Foug, whose shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Ohio State hit the left post in the 74th minute and sophomore Jada Dayne cleared the ball away and out of danger.
Seven minutes later, the Buckeyes broke the tie as Eleanor Gabriel played a ball across the mouth of the goal from the right touch line and Sammy Edwards punched it into the lower left corner. OSU's lone goal proved to be the difference in the rivalry matchup.
Jackson played all 90 minutes in net, finishing with six saves, and is now averaging eight saves per game this season to lead the Big Ten.
Michigan will wrap up its three-game road stand, traveling to East Lansing, Michigan, to take on Michigan State on Saturday (Oct. 14) at 6 p.m.
