ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Mohammed Zakyi scored twice, the second of the game-winning fashion in the 106th minute, as the University of Michigan men's soccer team defeated the Omaha Mavericks, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday (Oct. 14) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Mavericks (7-4-2) got on the board against the run of play in the 39th minute, as Xavier Gomez played a ball from the center of the field to the left wing. The pass found Diego Gutierrez, who finished just inside the right post to give Omaha the 1-0 lead.
Michigan (8-4-2), chasing a goal, witnessed Zakyi's initial brilliant effort on the afternoon with nearly 30 minutes to go. The Ghanaian leveled the Wolverines up on an inch-perfect set piece from classmate Marc Ybarra, as the right-footed service from 30 yards out was placed perfectly to the onrushing Zakyi, who finished inside the six to knot the game at 1.
Knotted at the end of regulation, U-M held a 14-12 shot advantage to go along with a trio of stellar saves from freshman goalkeeper Henry Mashburn, who made his collegiate debut in the matchup.
Following a scoreless initial overtime session, Zakyi struck again at the 105:15 mark. Senior Tristan Jacob, who entered the match for the first time at the beginning of the first extra session, sent a ball from 35 yards out on the left flank that mirrored the previous U-M goal, as Zakyi finished inside the six yet again to lift the Wolverines to the victory.
Following a week off, U-M's longest break of the season, the Wolverines return to conference play. With two Big Ten matches to go, the Maize & Blue trek to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday (Oct. 21) at 7 p.m. in a crucial Big Ten matchup that will be streamed via BTN Plus.
