PISCATAWAY, NJ -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team trailed the No. 18 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 8-6 going into the final quarter but was unable to close the gap and was outscored 5-0 in the fourth quarter, falling by a 13-6 count Sunday (April 10) at Rutgers' High Point Solutions Stadium.
Michigan paced by junior Ian King, who keyed the offense early and often and had a hand in both of U-M's initial goals. The first came with an assist on a goal from sophomore Sean McCanna at 12:19 of the opening quarter, while the latter came on an extra-man goal at 1:52 of the first on a lefty rip from the left wing.
Trailing 4-2 with 7:41 to play in the second, sophomore Patrick Tracy made it 4-3 on a dodge from X, finishing in close lower left to 4-3, before Rutgers' Jules Heningburg marked a tally 30 seconds later to make the score 5-3 heading into the half.
Senior/junior goalie Gerald Logan was strong early on with eight first-half saves and totaled 12 on the day, but the story of the opening half and the majority of the contest was senior face-off man Brad Lott, who went 8-of-10 at the dot in the first half and finished with an impressive 16-of-23 effort at the dot to go along with seven ground balls.
In the second, RU stretched its lead to 6-3 in the early going, but U-M then answered with back-to-back scores from senior Peter Kraus and King to bring the count to 6-5 with 3:49 to play in the third stanza.
However, Rutgers' Scott Bieda scored back-to-back goals for the Scarlet Knights less than 40 seconds apart to stretch the deficit to three at 8-5. In the waning moments of the third, U-M's sophomore defensive midfielder Chase Young stole a goal with eight seconds left in the quarter off a full-field clear that also featured an assist from Tracy, his second point of the day, as the quarter ended with U-M trailing 8-6.
Down a pair heading into the final quarter, Rutgers owned the rest of the scoring the afternoon, outscoring U-M 5-0 and outshooting Michigan 14-5.
The Wolverines owned the ground-ball advantage 27-25 and outshot the Scarlet Knights in the second and third quarters of action. Lott's dominance at the dot resulted in five face-off violations.

Following today's matchup, U-M will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes next Saturday (April 16) at 11 a.m. The contest, dubbed the 'Showdown in the Shoe,' will precede the Ohio State Football Spring Game and be broadcast live via the Big Ten Network.
The outing for Lott is his best day since he won 21-of-24 faceoffs and collected a career-high 15 ground balls against Bellarmine March 15, 2014.
For the third straight game, U-M was without leading scorer Kyle Jackson due to injury.
U-M falls to 1-4 on the season when scoring between 6-9 goals and 1-5 when owning the ground-ball advantage.
With his assist, King is one assist shy of tying Will Meter's single-season record of 15 assists. King's 14 helpers leads the team. The three-point effort is his seventh multi-point game of the year.
