ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a game of lead changes and runs, the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team earned its first Big Ten Conference victory, holding off Rutgers, 10-8, Sunday (April 5) inside Michigan Stadium. Sophomore Ian King returned after a four-game absence to score four goals, while junior Kyle Jackson marked a trio as the Wolverines equaled its win total from a season ago.
Junior/sophomore Gerald Logan made 13 saves, helping to lead the charge for the Wolverines.
Michigan got going early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on three goals from three separate Wolverine players. Rutgers (4-8, 0-2 B1G) answered with three goals of its own, tying the score at 3-3 midway through the second quarter. Michigan scored a goal with 6:35 left in the half on a left alley drive by junior Mike Hernandez, while Rutgers scored two goals in the remaining six minutes to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
U-Mcame out firing in the second half with two early goals, from King and junior Riley Kennedy. After a Rutgers goal, U-M scored four straight to end the third quarter, with two goals each from Jackson and King. Trailing 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter, Rutgers came out with two goals, cutting the lead to 10-8 with 9:44 remaining in the game, but the Wolverines held off late attempt from Rutgers and closed the win.
Face-offs played a huge role in the contest, as Rutgers specialist Joe Nardella went 9-of-11 on chances at the first half, before U-M went 4-of-11 at the dot in the second half.
U-M will next play host to the Ohio State Buckeyes next Sunday (April 12) at 2 p.m. from Michigan Stadium in a contest that will be broadcast live via ESPNU. The contest is also U-M's first of the season with Creators Trophy implications, a traveling trophy that is awarded to the winner of the Ohio State, Penn State and U-M series.
