ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team had late leads over No. 20 North Carolina in sets two and three, and junior Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) recorded her second straight double-double, but the Tar Heels defeated the Wolverines in three sets Saturday afternoon (Sept. 6) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-16, 26-24 and 27-25.

Warner had 32 assists and 10 digs to go with a pair of blocks in the three-set match. Junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) led Michigan with 15 digs, while junior Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and freshman Katherine Mahlke (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had nine kills apiece. Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) was in on six of Michigan's eight blocks.
North Carolina jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in taking the first set. The Wolverines had it at 9-7 UNC after blocks from Warner and junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet), but the lead extended to 18-11 after a Lauren McAdoo kill and 21-12 on a termination from Victoria McPherson. McAdoo closed out the set with a kill as UNC hit .286 compared to .139 for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines were up 17-12 after Warner's kill in the second set, and a Tar Heel service error made it 19-15 Michigan. North Carolina went on a run to take a 21-20 lead, but U-M pushed ahead 23-22 on a UNC attack error. The Tar Heels had a pair of set points, taking advantage of the second one on a block, giving North Carolina a 2-0 advantage. Mahlke had four kills in that set, while Morales added six digs.
The Maize and Blue fell behind UNC by as much as five points in the third set but fought back to tie the set at 20 after a UNC error. With freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) serving, kills from Cole and Davis put Michigan up two (22-20). The Wolverines had a pair of set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Tar Heels scored the final three points to take the match, splitting the weekend for the Wolverines.
Michigan heads to the Beaver State for two matches in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge next weekend. The Wolverines first face Oregon State on Friday afternoon (Sept. 12) at 5:30 p.m. PDT. The match will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
