NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team was defeated, 3-0, by the Columbia Lions Saturday (Sept. 6) at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines found themselves down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of action and were unable to mount a comeback despite holding a 11-1 corner-kick advantage in the match.
Columbia's Rhys Williams opened up the scoring during the eighth minute of action. Following a failed U-M clearance and after a blocked shot, the midfielder shelved a right-footed shot top right to put the Lions on the board early-on.
The Lions doubled their lead in the 20th minute as Francisco Agrest hit a shot from 20 yards out. The strike was perfectly placed in the right upper-90, giving the Lions the 2-0 advantage.
The Wolverines did not lack chances in the first half, outshooting the Lions, 5-4, in the opening 30 minutes of action but were unable to find a breakthrough. Senior midfielder Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./St. John's) had U-M's best scoring chance, in the 33rd minute, off a corner kick follow-up shot that was stopped by Columbia's goalkeeper Kyle Jackson.
U-M came out of the gates firing in the second half, as Arnone had another rocket of a shot that was blocked off a Columbia corner-kick clearance two minutes in. Once again, Jackson was up to task with another solid save on the right-footed volley.
Against a packed-in Lion defense in the second-half, U-M earned several corners early on in the opening 15 minutes but was unable to get on the scoreboard early on.
Following a lightning delay in the 71st minute, Columbia iced the game with another goal from Williams. His second tally of the day came after a corner that was put home back post just two minutes after the restart. Time of the goal was 72:38.
The Maize and Blue had one final chance to get on the board in the 79th minute, as junior forward James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School) sent in a looping cross from the left flank 25 yards out that found the head of sophomore Lars Eckenrode (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) at the top of the six, but the leaping effort was headed narrowly high of the bar.
U-M returns home to take on the Maryland Terrapins, currently ranked No. 10 nationally, on Friday (Sept. 12) at 5 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will serve as the first Big Ten Conference match ever for the Terps.
