CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Sophomore Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) allowed just one run in seven innings of work, but Illinois was equal to the task, as the University of Michigan baseball team was shut out, 1-0, Friday night (April 11) at Illinois Field.
Hill scattered eight hits and allowed a run with two strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work and was tagged with the hard-luck loss. Illinois' Drasen Johnson and Tyler Jay combined to allow six hits and no runs with five strikeouts on the night. Johnson picked up his fourth win of the season while Jay had his fourth save.
Illinois strung together five hits for a run in the fourth. Will Krug led off the inning with a double, but Hill picked him off at second. Michael Hurwitz followed with a single and moved to second on a balk. Illinois put runners on the corners with a Jason Goldstein single and Reid Roper plated the run with a single up the middle. Junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) ended the fourth inning with a perfect throw to the plate to get Goldstein for the third out of the inning. Sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) saved a run in the fifth, throwing out Adam Walton at the plate for the third out to keep it a one-run game.
Michigan's best chance of scoring happened in the first. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) singled on the first pitch. He was doubled up on Cronenworth's lineout, but Glines followed with a double. He was stranded on second after a groundout ended the inning.
Maezes and Glines had two hits apiece for Michigan, while Krug had two hits for the Fighting Illini.
Michigan continues its three-game series at Illinois on Saturday afternoon (April 12) in Champaign, Ill. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CDT at Illinois Field.
