ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The collegiate summer leagues across the country have wrapped up their seasons after Battle Creek won the Northwoods League title last Friday (Aug. 19). Here is a recap of how the Wolverines fared during the summer months.
ARIZONA COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) hit .319 with four doubles, three triples and three home runs for the Sidewinders. He also drove in 14 runs in 72 plate appearances ... Redshirt junior Matt Broder (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) made one appearance for the Sidewinders, earning the win while striking out seven in four innings of work.
CAPE COD
Redshirt junior Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) posted a 3.94 earned-run average in eight appearances on the mound for the Wareham Gateman. In 29.2 innings pitched, Brosnahan struck out 24 batters, going 3-3 in six starts. He struck out nine in six innings of work in a win over Chatham on June 11 ... Junior Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) played in 12 games, before injury cut his summer short. He drove in five runs and stole two bases for Wareham ... Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) stole 12 bases and had a .308 on-base percentage for Cotuit. He played in 37 games for the Kettleers ... Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) had three doubles and six runs batted in for Yarmouth-Dennis. He stole four bases in 31 games for the Red Sox.
GREAT LAKES
Redshirt sophomore Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) went 3-1 with a 3.80 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched for Lake Erie. McAnallen's summer was highlighted by pitching a no-hitter against the Matsu Miners in Alaska. He struck out 12 and walked just one in the win. He then gave up just a single in the seventh inning in a 2-0 win over Grand Lake. He struck out nine in the seven-inning performance ... Sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) hit .294 with five doubles, a home run and 17 RBI for Lake Erie. In 37 games played, Winger had a .352 on-base percentage and a .357 slugging percentage. He also made six total appearances on the mound.
MICHIGAN COLLEGIATE
Senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) hit .266 with eight doubles, a pair of home runs and 20 RBI for the Michigan Knights. Crank had a .367 on-base percentage and a .415 slugging percentage for the Knights. Redshirt sophomore Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) drove in 14 runs in 29 games for the Knights. He had four doubles and a .341 on-base percentage. Junior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) went 1-1 with a 1.23 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched for the Knights. He struck out 11 batters and allowed just nine hits on the mound. Senior Ryan Kopf (Highland, Mich./Milford) pitched 41 innings for the Knights and had 51 strikeouts, which led the team. Kopf had a 3.51 ERA and pitched two complete games ... Redshirt sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) hit .239 with three doubles and a .376 on-base percentage for the Michigan Rams. Sophomore Jake Engels (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) was 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 14 strikeouts in eight appearances for the Rams. Redshirt freshmen Jay Perry (Royal Oak, Mich./U of D Jesuit) also was 1-1 with a 2.56 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 13 games. Freshman Jonny McCann (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) had a .400 on-base percentage and eight stolen bases for the Rams.
NEW ENGLAND COLLEGIATE
Senior Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) was 3-1 with a 1.00 ERA in 10 appearances for the Newport Gulls. Sinnery added a save and struck out 34 batters in 45 innings pitched. He struck out nine in eight innings of work July 16 at New Bedford.
NORTHWOODS
Junior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) and redshirt junior Chad Jasman (Bay City, Mich./Western) helped Battle Creek win the Northwoods League championship. Ballantine was 3-1 with a 2.27 ERA in nine appearances and seven starts for the Bombers. He had 40 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched. He also earned a win in the championship series against Mankato and started the Northwoods League All-Star Game for the South. Jasman made 16 appearances for Battle Creek, striking out 21 batters in 33.2 innings pitched ... Senior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) had an 8-3 record with 34 strikeouts in 56.2 innings pitched for Alexandria. He made 19 appearances with seven starts and earned a win in the Northwoods League playoffs over Mankato.
VALLEY
Sophomore Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) hit .308 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBI for the Winchester Royals. Lakatos was second on the team in batting average, on-base percentage (.400) and slugging percentage (.455). He also made eight appearances on the mound, striking out 25 in 21 innings of work.
