ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was unable to overcome a five-run sixth inning by Illinois, losing the middle game of its three-game series, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon (April 11) at the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Five different Wolverine hitters posted multiple hits with senior second baseman Kevin Cislo(Novi, Mich./Novi) and sophomore centerfielder Ryan LaMarre(Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) each going 2-for-3, with LaMarre adding a team-high three RBI in the loss.
Junior starting pitcher Eric Katzman(Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) lasted just three-and-two-thirds innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks while taking a no-decision. Sophomore Kolby Wood(Eau Claire, Mich./Berrien Springs) picked up the loss out of the bullpen after allowing five runs -- just two of which were earned -- on three hits in just over an inning of work.
The Wolverine bats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with LaMarre, junior first baseman Mike Dufek(Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and freshman designated hitter Coley Crank(Pinole, Calif/Pinole Valley) all picking up RBI in the frame. With runners on the corners and nobody out, LaMarre doubled down the left field line to drive Cislo in for the first run of the game. Dufek followed with a groundout to first to score fifth-year senior leftfielder Kenny Fellows(Holt, Mich./Holt) before Crank drove in LaMarre with a long sacrifice fly to left, giving Katzman the early 3-0 cushion.
U-M extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth when LaMarre singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on a throwing error by the Illini shortstop, giving the home team a 4-0 advantage.
After Illinois scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull within 4-3 and chase Katzman from the game, U-M scored twice in the bottom of the frame to reestablish a three-run margin. Senior catcher Tim Kalczynski(Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) singled to lead off the inning and scored on the second Illini error of the game. With runners on the corners, LaMarre came through again with a RBI sac fly, scoring Cislo for a 6-3 lead.
Illinois roared back over the next two innings, scoring seven unanswered runs off a combination of Wood and sophomore reliever Matt Miller(Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) to grab a 10-6 lead.
U-M responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a LaMarre sacrifice fly and one more in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by junior rightfielder Alan Oaks(White Lake, Mich./Divine Child), but the Illini lead was too much to overcome as U-M fell, 10-8.
Michigan returns to the home diamond for an Easter Sunday (April 12) matinee and the rubber game of a three-game series against Illinois with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
