ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Graduate student/senior defender Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team was tapped for the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 9). The Wolverine co-captain played an integral role as Michigan shut down two of the Big Ten Conference's best offenses in a pair of ties last week.

On Thursday (Oct. 4), Cottrell led the defensive effort that held Indiana without a single corner kick in front of the Big Ten Network's national television audience en route to the 1-1 tie at home. She also registered the first point of her career, assisting on the game-tying goal in the second half. Cottrell came close to scoring off a corner kick, ringing a header off the post and creating the rebound that senior forward Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) slammed home.
In Sunday's (Oct. 7) match against No. 8 Purdue, the conference's top offense, Cottrell and the Wolverines held the Boilermakers at bay, forcing their arsenal of scorers to take low-percentage shots the entire game. Cottrell played all 110 minutes in Michigan's second scoreless tie against an NSCAA top 10 squad this season.
A two-time captain for head coach Debbie Rademacher's team, Cottrell was named an All-Big Ten second team selection and U-M's Most Valuable Player as a senior/junior and is a four-time academic All-Big Ten honoree. She becomes the second Wolverine this season to be named to the Soccer Buzz Team of the Week, joining junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), who was honored Sept. 5.
Michigan is on the road this weekend for two Big Ten contests, facing Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 12) in Columbus, Ohio, before playing No. 10 Penn State at noon Sunday (Oct. 14) in State College, Pa.
