NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 20 University of Michigan field hockey team suffered a 2-0 setback to No. 3 Old Dominion Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10) at Foreman Field. After a scoreless first half, the Monarchs scored a pair of goals midway through the second to seal the non-conference victory.
The Wolverines where held without a shot in the largely defensive opening half but went on the attack early in the second frame, applying continuous pressure in Old Dominion territory, but they could not find the back of the cage.
Momentum shifted, however, at the 50:22 mark when the Monarchs' capitalized on a penalty corner to score the only goal they would need. Caroline Nichols hit the board on a direct shot at the top of the U-M striking circle, while Dana Sensenig and Katelyn Smither earned assists for the stop and the push. ODU scored again less than four minutes later -- at the 54:06 mark -- as Denise Admiraal converted on another hard shot near the top of the circle.
Old Dominion outshot the Wolverines 11-6 in the contest, and the two squads each posted five penalty corner opportunities. Senior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) earned four saves for the Wolverines, while the Monarchs' Kelly Driscoll stopped all three U-M shots on goal for her second straight shutout victory.
The Wolverines will continue non-conference competition next weekend at home when they host Ball State on Friday (Sept. 15) and Louisville on Sunday (Sept. 17) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The game against the BSU is set to begin at 3 p.m., while the match against Louisville is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
