COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team suffered a 6-1 loss at No. 14 Ohio State on Friday (Sept. 23) to see its five-game winning streak come to an end in its Big Ten opener at North Turf Field. With four OSU goals scored in the first half, the Wolverines could not recover from the early deficit.
The Buckeyes opened scoring in the contest with back-to-back goals coming within a 30-second window early in the opening frame. Linda Haussener and Leticia Fragapane tallied similar, unassisted goals at the 6:19 and 6:47 marks. Both OSU players dribbled the ball into the Wolverine circle and sent shots past junior Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) in the U-M cage.
Junior Kara Lentz (Manchester, Mass./St. Paul's School) put the Wolverines on the scoreboard at 10:35, capitalizing on a penalty stroke opportunity. It was Lentz's second penalty stroke attempt of her collegiate career, adding to last weekend's missed shot against Vermont.
OSU added two more tallies to close the half and head into the intermission with a three-goal cushion. Fragapane batted in a loose ball rolling through the U-M circle at the 13:92 mark, while Curlynne Wynn scored directly off of a Buckeye penalty corner with just over a minute remaining in the frame. Fragapane continued to lead the Ohio State attack in the second half, earning her third and fourth markers of the game at 49:52 and 60:00 with assists from Lauren Kruse on each.
Ohio State dominated the shot and penalty corner statistics in the first half, posting 14-4 and 5-0 advantages, respectively, but the Wolverines rallied in the second frame to produce an even shot differential (5-5) and outcorner the Buckeyes 4-2. Riley earned three saves in the U-M cage, while OSU goaltender Lindsay Williams made four stops on Michigan's five shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up the weekend road trip on Sunday (Sept. 25) when they travel to Kent, Ohio, to square off against Kent State in a noon non-conference meeting.
