IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan field hockey team continued to roll in Big Ten Conference play with a 4-0 victory over the Iowa on Friday (Sept. 29) at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. Kelli Gannon's (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) two goals pushed her past Julie Flachs (1994-97) into second place on U-M's all-time points with 108.
Besides Gannon's efforts, the Maize and Blue had an unlikely offensive hero in defender Ashley Thomas (West Chester, Pa./Unionville HS). Thomas, known for her defensive savvy, scored the game-winner six minutes into the first half. The goal was Thomas' second of her career.
The game remained 1-0 until 6:28 of the second half, when Kelli Gannon scored an unassisted goal. Sister Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) took a shot off a penalty corner 40 seconds later and put in her 10th goal of the season, with the assists going to Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, S. Australia/Westminister) and Courtney Reid (S. Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon HS).
Reid and Foreman felt like being generous, so they set up Kelli Gannon on another penalty corner at 4:12 to take the final score to 4-0. Freshman goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) stopped one shot to register her third career shutout.
The fourth-ranked Wolverines (11-1, 3-0 Big Ten) will take on Southwest Missouri State on Saturday (Sept. 30) at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa.
