ANN ARBOR, MICH. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team narrowly defeated Southwest Missouri State 1-0 Thursday (Sept. 10) at Ocker Field. The lone goal for the 11th-ranked Wolverines came off the stick of freshman Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) from senior Lindsay Babbitt (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) with 13:20 remaining in the first half.
Goalkeeper Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) recorded her second shutout of the young season but was forced to make only two saves as U-M outshot the Bears 22-5.
Southwest Missouri State nearly tied the game with under seven minutes to play on a two-on-none breakaway. Jemima Cameron carried the ball down the left side of the field and when Oakes played the ball, Cameron passed the ball to a teammate who had a wide open net, but the ball rolled safely off her stick and Michigan survived.
The Wolverines continue their three-game homestand by hosting Central Michigan on Friday (Sept. 11) at 4 p.m. The homestand concludes with Michigan facing Stanford Sunday (Sept. 13) at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Ocker Field.
