STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- In a classic Big Ten Conference duel, the 10th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team squared-off against No. 7 Penn State University in an attempt to avenge its only conference loss this year. Unfortunately, the Wolverines, who entered the weekend in sole possession of first place in the league, ended up on the short side of the stick with a 2-0 loss Friday evening (Oct. 23). The Lady Lions raised their record to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in Big Ten action, while Michigan fell to 12-4 and 5-2.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half before Penn State made its move. Traci Anselmo scored 9:30 into the second session on a play from Dawn Lammey and Maegan Galie. Heather Gorlaski sealed the scoring for the Lions with just over five minutes remaining, adding another assist for Lammey.
Wolverine first-year starter Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) faced 18 shots on goal and registered six saves, giving her 64 on the season. The Lions were able to keep Michigan's offense to a minimum, facing just seven shots on goal, two each from senior Loveita Wilkinson (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) and sophomore Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS).
Michigan takes on Ohio State, the Big Ten's third-place team, on Sunday (Oct. 25) in Columbus.
