
Michigan Runs Past Mercyhurst, Sets Program Goals Record to Open 2026

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team broke the program scoring record as it ran past Mercyhurst 24-2 to open the 2026 season at the Sweebe Family Athletic Center on the campus of Adrian College.
The Wolverines (1-0) broke the previous program record of 23 goals in a single game set on Feb. 22, 2022, against Canisius.
In his first career game, freshman attacker Luke Shannehan netted five goals and added two assists for seven points, six of which came in the first half. Junior Alex Lobel recorded a career-best five goals and had one assist, while Nick Roode scored four on four shots and Bo Lockwood added three to round out the quartet of hat tricks for the Maize and Blue. Lockwood also tacked on three assists for a total of six points and Matt Han handed out two helpers.
Freshman Tay Rodriguez won 11 faceoffs in his first time out and Jack Rideout matched him with 11 of his own as the Wolverines dominated.
Goalie Hunter Taylor made eight saves in the cage and Crandall Quinn added two in the second half. Defensively, nine Wolverines caused a turnover.
Mercyhurst (0-1) got on the board first, but it was all Michigan from there, going on a 14-goal run, scoring five in the first quarter with a hat trick from Shannehan. The Wolverines continued to roll in the second as they poured in another seven goals, with four from Roode.
Michigan took a comfortable 12-1 lead into halftime, outshooting Mercyhurst 23-10 in the first 30 minutes of action.
The Wolverine tear continued into the third quarter, with Shannehan and Lobel scoring one each before the Lakers added what was their final goal of the contest to make it 14-2.
The Maize and Blue finished the game on a 10-0 run, with goals coming from eight players, including Nicholas Voultos, Luke Kelly, Josh Ford and Thomas Augustine.
Michigan heads to Milwaukee, Wis., for an 11 a.m. CT contest next Saturday (Feb. 7) against Marquette.
