ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Elle Ervin's 25th-minute header proved to be the difference as the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its second conference victory of the season in a 1-0 shutout over Minnesota on Sunday (Sept. 28) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Sophie Homan delivered her fourth match of the season with six or more saves, stopping all six shots she faced in the second half. The senior captain made a pivotal denial on a Minnesota (5-5-1, 1-3-1 Big Ten) penalty kick in the 47th minute to preserve her fourth clean sheet of 2025, becoming the first Wolverine goalkeeper to save a penalty since Stephanie Sparkowski in 2023.
Homan had help securing the shutout from defenders Ellie Fife and Campbell Jewell, who logged 90 minutes for the Wolverines (5-6-1, 2-2-1 Big Ten). Fife has now played the full game eight times this season, while Jewell has done so six times.
The Wolverines controlled the opening half, dominating possession and racking up four corners to the Gophers' none while outshooting the visitors 6-2.
Michigan broke through when Vickie Jones fed midfielder Adi Walick, who crossed into the box for Ervin's headed finish. The Wolverines nearly doubled the advantage three minutes later when Ervin again found the net off a pass from Beanie Harshe, but the potential score was waved off for offsides.
The match turned physical down the stretch, with both teams finishing with 11 fouls apiece, 10 of which came in the second half. Michigan maintained steady pressure and ended the match with a 13-11 shot advantage and an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Wolverines will look for their third consecutive win with a trip to Iowa on Saturday (Oct. 4) for a 6 p.m. CT Big Ten match streamed live on B1G+.
