IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior captain Jenna Lang's first goal of the season helped the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw at No. 10 Iowa on Saturday (Oct. 4) night at the UI Soccer Complex. The tie marks the Wolverines' second of the campaign against a ranked foe and is the fourth consecutive meeting with the Hawkeyes that has ended in a draw.
Lang's 60th-minute screamer came off her rebounded blocked shot to give the Wolverines the lead midway through the second half. The score was only U-M's fourth shot of the evening to Iowa's 21 as the home side put six shots on goal to Michigan's two.
Senior captain Sophie Homan saved four of the six shots on frame, with classmate Aniyah League denying a point-blank Hawkeye shot attempt from the goal line that kept the affair scoreless with four minutes remaining in the first half.
Coming out of the break, Michigan (5-6-2, 2-2-2 Big Ten) deterred four quick Iowa corner kicks and blocked two of four Hawkeye shots, the other pair saved by Homan.
Iowa (8-2-3, 3-1-2 Big Ten) continued its early second-half momentum until Lang silenced the home crowd. After fielding a long free kick served into the box by Adi Walick, Lang rifled a low shot that was ricocheted back to her left foot, and she put the rebound into the top-right corner to put Michigan on the board first.
The lead only held for eight minutes, with Iowa leveling the score in the 68th minute and remaining even after the goal was upheld by VAR review for goalie interference.
U-M earned one more promising chance with eight minutes remaining, but Campbell Jewell's shot was saved, and Michigan settled for a crucial league point on the road.
The Wolverines will be back at home on Thursday (Oct. 9) to host No. 16 Michigan State for a Maize Out match at U-M Soccer Stadium. The contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
