
Michigan Runs Past Eastern Michigan in Midweek Contest

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a decisive 17-5 victory over Eastern Michigan in a midweek non-conference contest on Wednesday (April 2) at the EMU Indoor Practice Facility.
The Wolverines (8-4) put 24 of their 32 shots on goal with Jill Smith recording a team-high six points (five goals, one assist) and Caroline Byrd collecting a hat trick with all three of her goals coming in the fourth quarter. Senior Kaylee Dyer added two goals and one assist, and Emerson Pattillo had two goals.
Emma Burke won 12 draw controls to outdraw the Eagles, who won seven as a team, and scored her first collegiate goal. Grace Callahan had three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Jordyn Harrison, Maya Rutherford and Taylor Cullen each picked up two ground balls and one caused turnover. In the cage, Maya Santa-Maria made seven saves to earn the victory.
Michigan came out firing as Burke won the opening draw control, and Smith scored just 40 seconds into the contest. Dyer added a pair and Smith scored her second as U-M got out to a quick 4-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the quarter.
EMU got one back, but Emma Bradbury and Peyton Shreves answered to give the Wolverines a 6-1 advantage heading into the second stanza.
The Eagles scored twice to open the second quarter and cut the Michigan lead to four before Smith tallied two straight to give U-M an 8-3 lead. Pattillo closed out the half with back-to-back goals and the Wolverines went into the halftime break with a 10-3 lead.
Smtih led Michigan with five points, including four goals, in the first half, while Burke won eight draw controls.
Each team added a goal in the third quarter as U-M went into the final 15 minutes of play with an 11-4 lead.
Michigan scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter, three of which came from Byrd, to take a comfortable 15-4 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the contest. The Wolverines added two more goals over the final five minutes, including Burke's first career goal, to lock up the non-conference win.
The Wolverines will head west to Oregon for a Big Ten Conference contest on Sunday (April 6) at noon PT. The matchup will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
