EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team improved to 3-2 in Big Ten Conference play with a 14-9 win over Oregon on Sunday (April 6) at Pape Field.
The Wolverines (9-4, 3-2 Big Ten) had eight different goal scorers, including hat tricks from seniors Kaylee Dyer and Julia Schwabe. Calli Norris and Emma Bradbury each added two goals, and Bradbury finished with a career-best four points. Schwabe also tallied one assist for four total points. Michigan outshot Oregon 45-26 and put 31 shots on goal.
Senior Maya Rutherford set a program record with her 71st career game played, surpassing the previous mark of 70 held by Maddie Burns and Annabelle Burke. She recorded three ground balls and one caused turnover. Defensively, Jill Smith, Ava Class, and Taylor Cullen each tallied three caused turnovers as the Wolverines forced 12 Oregon turnovers overall.
Freshman Emma Burke led Michigan in draw controls with 12, marking her second consecutive and fourth career double-digit performance. Smith added four draw controls as Michigan held an 18-7 edge in the circle.
The teams traded goals through the opening 12 minutes before Michigan closed the first quarter with two straight to take a 4-2 lead. The Wolverines opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Bradbury and Dyer to extend the lead to four. Peyton Shreves capped the half with a transition goal that gave U-M a 9-4 halftime lead.
Michigan opened the second half with three of the first four goals, including a score from Class on the opening possession. The Wolverines led 14-7 heading into the fourth quarter after Oregon closed the third with a three-goal run. The Ducks scored the only two goals of the final frame, but the Wolverines maintained control to close out the win.
Michigan returns home Sunday (April 13) to host No. 4 Johns Hopkins at noon at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
