
Wolverines Drop Overtime Contest to Penn State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell to Penn State, 13-12, in overtime on Sunday (March 30) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium in a Big Ten Conference contest.
The Wolverines (7-4, 2-2 B1G) outscored the Nittany Lions (4-7, 2-2 B1G) 4-2 in the fourth quarter, including two goals from Jill Smith to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, a save from Penn State and a quick goal on its offensive end allowed the Nittany Lions to secure the win.
Senior Kaylee Dyer led U-M with six points, recording three goals and three assists, while Jill Smith scored four goals in the second half and added six draw control wins. Junior Calli Norris chipped in two goals, while Ava Class and Emma Bradbury each contributed one goal and one assist.
Defensively, Taylor Cullen scored for the second straight game and had one ground ball. Junior Jordyn Harrison caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls, while Grace Callahan added two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Senior Erin O'Grady made nine saves in net, and Emma Burke added four draw control wins for the Wolverines.
Michigan and Penn State exchanged goals in the first quarter. Dyer and Class each converted free-position shots before Dyer assisted Norris to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the second. The Nittany Lions outscored the Wolverines 4-2 in the second quarter to take a 7-5 halftime lead.
The teams traded goals early in the third quarter. Cullen found the back of the net off a feed from Dyer to bring U-M within two, 9-7, with 3:34 left. PSU responded a minute later, but Smith scored just before the end of the quarter to make it 10-8 entering the fourth.
Smith scored again five minutes into the fourth to close the gap to one, though Penn State answered shortly after. Trailing by two with under five minutes remaining, Norris buried a free-position shot to pull U-M within one.
With time winding down, Bradbury circled from behind the cage and found a cutting Smith, who scored to tie the game at 12-12. Michigan won the ensuing draw and had a chance to win in regulation, but a key Penn State save sent the game to overtime.
U-M again secured the opening draw in overtime, but Penn State came up with another save and scored on its next possession to clinch the win.
Michigan returns to U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Wednesday (April 3) for a non-conference matchup against Eastern Michigan. First draw is set for 5 p.m.
