ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team (6-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will kick off its four-game homestand against Miami of Ohio (4-4) at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 29) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The matchup will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• The Wolverines boast a six-game win streak after dropping their season opener 4-1 to No. 2 and two-time defending NCAA champion North Carolina on Aug. 30. Among the wins, Michigan defeated Wake Forest 2-1 in its finale of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (Sept. 1) and, most recently, opened the Big Ten Conference slate with a 3-0 win over Michigan State on Monday (Sept. 23). The Wolverines have moved up in each NFHCA poll this season and are currently ranked No. 8 nationally.
• Michigan has outscored its opposition 36-8 over the first four weekends of the season, including a 20-0 differential over the last three games. The Wolverines are already just two goals shy of their entire 2023 total (38). Twelve U-M players have scored this season with five boasting three-or-more goals. Graduate student Kate McLaughlin leads the Wolverines with a career-best nine goals, while senior/junior Abby Tamer is one away from her career high with eight; Tamer has scored at least one goal in each of the last six games.
• The Wolverines lead the nation in several categories, including goals per game (5.14) and scoring margin (4.00). McLaughlin ranks third nationally with 1.50 goals per game and Tamer is sixth with 1.14 goals per game. Tamer also ranks sixth nationally with 0.86 assists per game.
• Senior/junior Caylie McMahon and sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein have combined for three straight shutout wins in the Wolverine cage. Silverstein has started all seven games this season, while McMahon, who is working through a nagging injury, has appeared in five games. McMahon led U-M with three saves in the fourth quarter against Michigan State (Sept. 23), including a late penalty-stroke stop to preserve the shutout. Michigan ranks ninth nationally with a 1.14 goals-against average.
• Michigan is coming off a 3-0 win in its Big Ten Conference opener against MSU on Monday (Sept 23). Tamer, freshman Eva Bernardy and graduate student Lora Clarke scored for the Wolverines, while Silverstein and McMahon combined for five total saves.
• Bernardy became the third Wolverine freshman to record her first collegiate goal, joining sophomore/freshman Payton Maloney and freshman Cami Wiseman. Bernardy previously registered her first assist on U-M's game-tying goal in the first quarter at Boston University (Sept. 6).
• Miami (Ohio) enters the weekend with a 4-4 record and will face Ball State prior to facing the Wolverines on Sunday. Miami got back into the win column on Sunday (Sept. 22) with a 6-1 rout of Bellarmine after dropping three straight games to Princeton (1-0 OT, Sept. 13), Rutgers (6-1, Sept. 15) and James Madison (2-1, Sept. 20). Claudia Negrete Garcia leads the RedHawks with five goals, while Carlie Servis owns a team-best five assists along with two goals of her own. Goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken carries a 1.64 goals-against average and .629 save percentage. Michigan leads 17-2 in the all-time series against Miami with a 1-0 win in the most recent meeting in 2022.
