ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team (3-0-1) remained undefeated with a 2-0 win over Bowling Green (3-1-0) on Monday (Sept. 2) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Oliver Martin scored his first goal of the season in his first start of 2024 while Charlie Lawrence notched his second of the campaign. Michael Leon registered his first assist of the season on Martin's tally. Bryce Blevins and Beto Soto were both credited with a helper on Lawrence's score. Soto now owns a team-high three assists with Blevins second at two. In goal, Isaiah Goldson logged his second shutout and win of the season while tallying four saves to keep the Falcons off the scoresheet.
After a scoreless 44 minutes, Leon looped a pass into the penalty box that Martin headed over the defender and goalkeeper and into the empty net to give Michigan the lead. Michigan has now scored first in all four of its matches in 2024.
Bowling Green applied pressure in the early stages of the second half, firing three shots on target within the first 20 minutes of the stanza. Goldson was equal to the challenge on all three occasions to maintain the shutout. U-M found its second goal in the 74th minute of play. Blevins lobbed a pass down the left side of the pitch towards Soto who fed a pinpoint pass to Lawrence through the middle, and Lawrence calmly cashed in the chance on his first touch.
The Wolverine defense settled in for the final 15-plus minutes of the contest, allowing only one shot to secure the third victory of the season for the Maize and Blue and its first win by two or more goals of the campaign.
U-M will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 6) when Detroit Mercy comes to U-M Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. matchup. Ten seniors will be honored prior to the game for their contributions to the Michigan soccer program.
