CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team surrendered three first-half goals in a weather-plagued contest at Xavier on Sunday (Aug. 18), falling 3-0 to the Musketeers at Corcoran Field.
The game started nearly 30 minutes late due to weather delays during warmups and was halted for more than an hour in the latter stages of the first half for lightning. Michigan (0-2-0) put three shots on frame in the game but could not find the back of the net. Stephanie Sparkowski and Sophie Homan each recorded a save in the contest in goal.
Xavier (2-0-0) struck first, scoring in the seventh minute of the contest for a 1-0 lead. The Musketeers connected on a long ball through the middle of the field and paid if off for the early advantage.
Adi Walick got a good look on goal in the 19th minute, but her chip shot was just high as Xaiver maintained its 1-0 lead.
The Musketeers extended their lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute, sending a cross into the box that Michigan initially cleared. Xavier cashed in on the rebound, with Olivia Lawson converting on her second goal of the game for a 2-0 XU lead.
Rain started to fall with about 15 minutes left in the first half, with play halted due to lightning in the 33rd minute at 6:08 p.m. Following more than an hour delay, play began again at approximately 7:15 p.m.
The Musketeers tacked on their third goal of the first half, scoring in the 40th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Michigan put a pair of shots on goal in the middle stages of the second half around the 70th minute, but the Xavier keeper saved both to keep Michigan off the board. Michigan totaled 11 shots for the contest.
Michigan completes a two-game road swing next time out, heading to Colorado next Sunday (Aug. 25) to face the Buffaloes at noon MDT.
