
Michigan Earns B1G Rivalry Victory Over Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team opened Big Ten Conference play with an 11-5 victory over Ohio State at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Thursday night (March 7).
The Wolverines (7-0, 1-0 Big Ten) dominated the draw control 17-3 as Lily Montemarano won a U-M single-game best 12 draws and both Josie Gooch and Maddie Burns won two draws each.
Junior Kaylee Dyer notched her second straight game with five goals to lead the Maize and Blue offensively, while Calli Norris and Jill Smith each scored a pair. Montemarano and Ava Class also added a goal apiece in the victory.
Defensively, Maddie Burns caused a team-best three OSU turnovers and picked up a team-high four ground balls, while Taylor Cullen had two caused turnovers. In the cage, Erin O'Grady earned the win and made seven saves to bring her career total to 100.
After surrendering an early 2-1 lead, the Wolverines roared back with three unanswered goals, taking a 4-2 lead into the second quarter. Both sides traded goals to start the second, but the Maize and Blue kept Ohio State off the scoreboard the rest of the way, holding a 5-3 lead at halftime.
Michigan jumped out of the gates in the third quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to build a 9-3 lead. The Wolverines' onslaught was buoyed by Dyer, who recorded her fifth hat trick of the season in just two minutes of action.
Dyer and Class concluded the Maize and Blue scoring night in the fourth quarter, with Class' shot coming as the result of a free-position opportunity. Though the Buckeyes scored two of their own before the final buzzer, the Wolverines left the field with a comfortable six-point victory, their largest in program history against the Buckeyes.
Michigan closes out its three-game homestand with a celebration of their its class against Central Michigan on Saturday (March 9) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time with seniors being honored postgame.
