
Michigan Wins Big Over Central Michigan on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned an 11-3 Senior Day victory over Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon (March 9) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
With the win, the Wolverines improved to 8-0 on the season.
Senior Maddie Burns led a defense that shut down the Chippewas with four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while also scoring her first collegiate goal. Taylor Cullen, Megan Minturn and Julia Schwabe also added two caused turnovers while Kaylee Dyer had three ground balls.
Offensively, Lily Montemarano and Katharine Merrifield scored two goals each, while Montemarano had a team-high seven draw-control wins. Jill Smith added three draw control wins, one goal and three assists in the victory.
In the cage, Erin O'Grady earned the win, while Maya Santa-Maria played the second half and made four saves.
Jane Fetterolf scored less than a minute into the game to set off a six-goal Wolverines run and put Michigan ahead 6-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. CMU found one goal before the clock expired and U-M took a 6-1 lead into the second quarter.
U-M added four more goals, including one from Montemarano off a pass from Shaylah Marciano, less than a minute into the second quarter, extending the Wolverines' advantage to 10-1 at the halftime break.
Michigan outshot Central Michigan 20-7 with 16 shots on goal over the first 30 minutes of play and won seven draw controls, with four wins from Montemarano.
Burns caught a pass off the draw control from Smith and scored the lone goal of the third quarter and the first of her career, while CMU added two goals and U-M carried an 11-3 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
Neither team scored a goal in the fourth quarter and the game ended 11-3 in favor of Michigan.
The Wolverines will go back on the road Thursday (March 14) when they travel to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers at 6 p.m. at SHI Stadium.
