ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse took the first loss of its season 8-6 at the hands of No. 1 Maryland on Saturday (March 30) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (11-1, 2-1 Big Ten) held a 4-2 lead going into the halftime break and extended their advantage to three to open the third quarter. However, the Terrapins (10-2, 3-0 Big Ten) netted four of the next five goals to knot the game at six with 5:09 left in the third quarter. U-M was unable to find a goal over the final 15 minutes.
Michigan outshot the Terrapins 28-19 with juniors Jill Smith and Julia Schwabe leading the Wolverines with two goals each and Kaylee Dyer added two points with a goal and an assist. On the draw, Lily Montemarano had six wins and Smith had one.
Defensively, Maya Rutherford had three ground balls and two caused turnovers and Taylor Cullen had three caused turnovers.
Maryland netted the first two goals of the game, but Michigan answered with four straight goals, including two from Schwabe, to take a 4-2 lead into the halftime break.
The Terrapins came out in the third quarter and scored two quick goals before Dyer grabbed a ball at X and fed Ava Class for a one-timer to extend the U-M lead to 6-4. Maryland stormed back with its third set of two goals and the two teams went into final 15 minutes of play tied at six.
UMD scored the first goal of the fourth quarter just two minutes in to take a 7-6 advantage and extended its lead to two with 4:40 left in the contest. Michigan could not find another shot in the final four minutes of action, falling 8-6 to the Terrapins.
Up next, Michigan travels to Detroit, Mich., for a 'Grow Our Game' contest against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday (April 3) at 3 p.m.
