Notes
• Michigan won its first conference series of the season taking two out of three at Penn State. The Wolverines are currently in a four-way tie for first place with Iowa, Illinois and weekend opponent, Maryland. The Wolverines lost a close game on Friday (March 22) to Penn State before rebounding with a 9-6 win on Saturday (March 23) behind a strong game from Will Rogers on the mound and at the plate. U-M took the final game of the series 11-6 after a nine-run seventh inning and a strong start from Mitch Voit on the mound.
• Voit is leading the Wolverines on both sides. He leads the team in multiple categories including hits (35), doubles (12) and batting average (.330). He is third on the team in both runs and RBIs at 16. His 12 doubles are second in the conference and eighth nationally. Voit is also leading the way on the mound with 37.1 innings pitched and 23 strikeouts. He currently holds a 2-3 record and has one complete game on the season.
• The Maize and Blue is once again leading the nation in double plays. After turning three against Michigan State on Tuesday (March 26), the Wolverines sit at 31 on the season. The team is averaging 1.24 a game, which ranks second nationally trailing UNC Asheville at 1.26 double plays per game. The team is just eight away from passing last season's total of 39. Kyle Dernedde has been involved in 23 of the 31, which leads the team.
• Stephen Hrustich has stepped up after a slow start. He has raised his average by more than a tenth over the past 10 games and is now second on the team hitting .299. Hrustich also leads the team and conference in home runs at eight. Over his last 10 games, he is slashing .421/.551/.868 with 11 runs, 10 RBIs and four home runs. He is one of three players to appear in every game this season joining Voit and Dernedde. Â
• AJ Garcia has started the last four games in centerfield and is 6-for-10 over the games. He has added three runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases. He is hitting .500 on the season with eight runs and is third on the team with three stolen bases. On Sunday against Penn State, Garcia had a three-hit day to lead the team along with Dylan Stanton.
• Jacob Denner has been a reliable arm for the Wolverines this season and is tied for the team lead in appearances. Over the past four games, Denner took the mound three times for 5.2 innings and no earned runs. A fifth-year senior, he has appeared in 75 games which ranks sixth all-time and is one away from creating a three-way time for fourth place with Ali Husain and Mike Ignasiak. He is also just two strikeouts away from 10th all-time and tying Connor O'Halloran. Â
• Kurt Barr earned his first weekend start of his career on Saturday and the win after six innings of work. He took Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors on March 18 after two relief appearances where he earned two wins over 11 innings of one-run baseball. Barr leads the team with a 4.02 ERA and is tied for second with Denner and Dylan Vigue in strikeouts at 21.
• Dylan Stanton has started the last four games at first base and seven of the last 10. Over those seven games, he is hitting .304 with four doubles and five runs. Stanton has 16 appearances on the season with 11 starts and holds a .370 on-base percentage.
• Thirty-five of the 38 players on the roster have seen game action this season with 22 players recording a plate appearance and 18 players seeing action on the mound. Joonsung Park was the most recent to do so and was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance. Five players have done both this season with Voit leading the way among those with six starts on the mound and 106 plate appearances.
• Maryland is 19-6 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. The Terrapins are on a two-game winning streak after an extra-innings win against Michigan State on Sunday and a midweek win against Georgetown. All-time, Michigan is 22-13 against Maryland and 10-9 in conference games. At home, U-M is 5-3 but dropped two of three in the last home series in 2021. The Wolverines did not face Maryland last season and were swept in College Park in 2022.Â
