
Michigan Puts Away No. 19 Colorado With Six-Goal Second Quarter

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team capitalized on a high-scoring second quarter to defeat No. 19 Colorado 13-8 on Saturday (March 2) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The win moved the Wolverines to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 against ranked opponents this season.
Six Wolverines contributed a goal to the victory, led by Kaylee Dyer, who scored a career-high matching five goals. Jill Smith also recorded a hat trick, finishing with three goals.
Lily Montemarano led the Michigan draw team with 10 wins, with Josie Gooch adding five of her own. U-M outdrew the Buffaloes by a 19-6 margin.
Maddie Burns forced a team-leading four ground balls, while Caroline Davis added to the defensive pressure with four forced turnovers. As a unit, Michigan converted four of its six free-position shots while allowing Colorado just one make in three attempts.
The bulk of the scoring came in the second quarter, when the Wolverines scored six goals to the Buffaloes' two. The Maize and Blue never trailed in the contest and led by as many as seven goals.
A back-and-forth start to the game was blown open by Dyer five minutes into the second quarter, scoring two of Michigan's five unanswered goals in the period. Though the Buffaloes scored three consecutive goals to trim the lead to four early in the final quarter, the Wolverines put things away with Dyer's fifth goal of the contest and Katharine Merrifield's second free-position conversion.
Michigan continues its homestand Thursday (March 7) when it opens Big Ten play against Ohio State at 6 p.m. on B1G+.
